October 7th Reflection

This week, the Weber School community gathered for a powerful and deeply reflective Kehillah to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the October 7 tragedy in Israel. Organized by Morah Keren Ben-Haim and our Shinshinim, and led by students, faculty, and special guests, the Tekes (ceremony) offered a solemn space for remembrance, reflection, and unity, honoring the lives lost and the families forever affected by this heartbreaking event. 

The program opened with a poignant address by Rabbi Joshua Heller, who shared a deeply personal account of his visit to Israel after October 7, 2023. Avishay Ben-Zvi, the bereaved son of Amitai Ben-Zvi z”l from Kibbutz Nir Oz, courageously spoke about the devastating loss of his family and the strength it takes to carry on. State Representative Esther Panitch contributed a message of solidarity and support, further deepening the sense of connection between our community and the people of Israel.

Musical performances and heartfelt prayers created moments of quiet strength throughout the ceremony. As student Noah Berg explained, “Music is incredibly powerful in helping us honor their memories and express emotions that words alone couldn’t capture. This program created a space for reflection and healing, reminding us of the strength we find in one another during times of sorrow.”

For faculty member Keren Ben-Haim, the program held profound meaning: “It gave us a crucial opportunity to connect our students to Israel, promoting understanding and unity during a time of crisis. This program not only pays tribute to those affected but also encourages our community to engage empathetically with the world around us. I am grateful to the community for their ongoing support. עם ישראל חי.”

Education and remembrance were key themes of the program. Student Einav Malka shared her thoughts: “It was important for me to be part of this ceremony because it is our responsibility to educate ourselves and others about the horrific attacks of October 7 so we never forget. The people of Israel—our people—suffered a massacre beyond words. Gathering to mourn the loss of over 1,200 innocent civilians, pray for the hostages, and honor the bravery and sacrifice of our soldiers one year after October 7 was both devastating and powerful.”

Reflecting on the event’s significance, Head of School Rabbi Ed Harwitz expressed his deep appreciation: “We are profoundly grateful for the leadership and dedication shown by our students, faculty, and broader community in making this ceremony meaningful. Creating such a reflective and important program on this difficult day was no small task, and the engagement of our entire Weber community was deeply moving. While we experienced the heartbreak of one year ago, the meaning, power, and dignity of this ceremony renewed our school's commitment to standing with the land and people of Israel. It was all the more meaningful as it took place during the 'Yamim Noraim'—the Ten Days of Awe—when we reflect on the past year and commit to the year ahead.”
