The Weber School’s Purimpalooza 5785 brought a week of festivities, learning, and celebration to campus, giving students, faculty, and staff the chance to engage in the traditions and mitzvot of Purim in meaningful and creative ways.
In addition to the traditional Megillah reading, this year’s Megill-Ed Talks offered a fresh take on the themes of Purim, blending storytelling, hands-on creativity, and interactive discussions. From Dungeons and Dragons and Hamantaschen, which reimagined the Megillah as a live-action fantasy adventure, to The Mask You Live In, which explored self-expression through art, students engaged in Purim’s central ideas in ways that resonated beyond the holiday. Other sessions examined Venahafochu, the Purim tradition of turning things upside down, and how Esther and Mordechai provide a model for confronting antisemitism in today’s world. Students also participated in festive trivia, mystery games, and a Stitchin’ to Celebrate workshop, where they embroidered their own groggers.
Beyond the classroom, the celebration continued with Weber’s annual Purim Seudah (festive holiday meal), featuring live klezmer music by Party Express by Tevyah for the fourth consecutive year, transforming the lunchroom into a lively celebration filled with food, music, and dancing. The Weber Parents Group once again led the effort to fulfill Mishloach Manot (gifts of food to loved ones), generously donating treats and assembling Purim gift bags to share the joy of the holiday with the entire school.
As part of the mitzvah of Matanot L’evyonim (gifts for those in need), Weber students came together for Concert for the Kibbutzim, a powerful event raising funds to support families in Israel affected by October 7. A full write-up of the concert, including highlights and the incredible impact of the funds raised, will be featured in an upcoming edition of What’s Up Weber.
And of course, what would Purim be without costumes? Students embraced the spirit of the holiday all week long with themed dress-up days, including ’Merica Monday, Pajama Tuesday, Color Day Wednesday, Hat Day Thursday, and Bibas Orange Friday.
