Commemorating the Yoms

After the establishment of the State of Israel, several special days were added to the Jewish calendar and are now observed as national holidays in Israel: Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), Yom HaZikaron (Memorial Day), and Yom HaAtzmaut (Independence Day). At The Weber School, these days are marked with learning opportunities and community-wide programs that encourage remembrance, reflection, and celebration.

Tomorrow, April 24, The Weber School will hold its annual school-wide Yom HaShoah Commemoration Ceremony, a solemn gathering to honor the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust.

This year’s program will begin with a special address from Holocaust survivor Bea Schemer, who will share her story with our school community. The program will also include personal reflections from students who participated in the Abe Besser Israel-Poland Experience and N'siyah Ashkenaz, the traditional candle lighting, sounding of the Yom HaShoah siren, and memorial prayers. In addition, student leaders will introduce Illuminate, a digital memorial initiative that invites individuals to light a virtual candle and honor a Holocaust victim through Yad Vashem’s online platform.

On Wednesday, April 30, Weber will hold a special tekes (ceremony) for Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day. Together, we will honor and remember the lives of Israeli soldiers and victims of terrorist attacks. Guests will include Mrs. Anat Sultan-Dadon, Consul General of Israel to the Southeastern United States, Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul, and representatives from Hillel of Georgia, who will offer personal reflections and stories. The ceremony will also feature a musical tribute by Weber students.

On Thursday, May 1, we will celebrate Yom HaAtzmaut, Israel’s 77th Independence Day, with a celebratory Kehillah. Hebrew students will share video clips they’ve created about Israel, and we’ll enjoy a surprise video message from Israel. Our ShinshinimAmit, Dana, and Noga—will lead a fun and interactive game of Israel-themed bingo, after which the school will come together for birthday cake as we celebrate Israel’s 77th year.
