This past Sunday, The Weber School proudly partnered with Shabbat Across Atlanta, a citywide initiative uniting Jewish homes in the spirit of connection, tradition, and community. As part of this collaboration, The Daniel Zalik Academy of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Design (DZA), housed in The Weber School, hosted a hands-on, creative exploration of Shabbat rituals, providing a meaningful way for participants to prepare for their Shabbat celebrations.
Led by Linda Parmet, Director of Hebrew Curriculum and Interdisciplinary Jewish Studies, and Madi Anderson, Director of Educational Operations and Community Partnerships, the workshop blended textual study, visual art, and cutting-edge technology—an #OnlyAtWeber experience that brought the deeper meaning of Shabbat to life.
Participants began with an interactive exercise inspired by the teachings of artist and educator David Moss, a practice that Linda Parmet incorporates into her Torah, Toolkits, and Powertools class. This approach, which connects Jewish text study with artistic interpretation, enriches students’ understanding of Judaism’s visual and literary traditions.
From there, with the guidance of student lab assistants Adrianna Castiglione and Drew Kaufman, participants watched the DZA’s laser cutting machine in action and then assembled and decorated personalized tzedakah boxes. Bringing the workshop full circle, The Weber School and DZA made the first contribution to each participant’s box—a meaningful reminder of giving and community.
