Students from Weber’s Sport Science and Management Academy (SSMA) recently participated in a unique field study at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United. The visit provided an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the stadium’s operations, showcasing the intersection of sports, environmental sustainability, and community engagement.
During the tour, students from various SSMA classes—including Sport Management, Foundations of Sport Science, Team Sports, Research Methods, and Exercise and Nutrition—explored Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s innovative design and sustainability features. As the first stadium globally to achieve TRUE Platinum Certification for zero waste, Mercedes-Benz Stadium offered students an up-close view of leading practices to reduce environmental impact within the sports industry. Students also explored the stadium’s transformative field, which can alternate between turf and real grass, as well as professional locker rooms and artwork celebrating Atlanta’s culture and community.
By examining the stadium’s design and environmental systems, students gained insight into how collaboration across disciplines like engineering, environmental science, and technology contributes to the functionality and impact of a major sports venue. This experience provided a real-world perspective on the innovative management practices shaping the future of sports and entertainment.
